Yesterday London and I went with some friends to pick berries at a u-pick ranch in Palo Alto! London was my taster and followed me along testing my bounty. We got loads of raspberries and blackberries and made a scrumdiddlyumptious cobbler last night. Yum! As I picked, I had such a good time and thought to myself, "why do people say we need immigrants to do this kind of labor?" And now I must wax political. Tim and I decided that the whole immigration issue is not discussed in the proper context. Really, the question is do the immigrants, with their labor, benefit our economy enough to outweigh the draws they make on our social programs? No! So rather than talking about building fences or the dreaded amnesty, what we really should be doing is getting rid of the social programs that eat up our tax dollars without solving any of the problems they are meant to. Not only would that address immigration, but it would address the sorry state of welfare in this country. Who doesn't like killing two birds with one stone?

May I recommend "Free to Choose" chapter 4 for a discussion on how said programs can be phased out in a way that is beneficial to all.
Thanks for the berry picking idea and pictures~ we had fun! I appreciate your political thoughts too. Cheers!
I'm all for immigration, just LEGAL immigration... if you break the law and come to our country, you shouldn't be entitled to ANY social programs (not even "anchor babies") and should NOT be allowed to stay (especially in front of the people waiting to go on the proper channels.
But yes, we have to lose the New Deal programs of FDR (as Grandma Eleanor said, "WRONG AS ROOSEVELT!) I'm terrified that we become a new Europe, starting with fouling up our healthcare by socializing it.
Thank you, Maret, for your wisdom on this matter. When it comes to politics, we can always defer to Grandma Eleanor!
yummy! the picture of the berries made me crave a little frozen yogurt with fresh berries on top. ummmm!!!! my brain processes politics the same way it does when korban starts talking finance... it zones out. you'd think being such a science nerd i'd comprehend the stuff, but i just don't. but thanks for making me squeeze my brain a bit.
I had so much for berry picking the other day. Thanks for planning this Jen!
Hey Jen! How fun to hear from you. I love finding people through the blogging world. Your little London is such a cutie! Where in California do you live? I noticed you're due in Dec. Congrats! I'm due on December 14th! How are you feeling?
It appears as if Timmy, Jen, and I are the only readers who like to talk politics. Everyone else seems to focus on the berry portion of the post...
